RACKETS
CHOOSING YOUR RACKET
There are thousands of different rackets to choose from and the choice can be daunting.
If you just follow these basic rules you will be fine. First, decide on your budget. If it is below £30 then you will need to look for an aluminium frame as these are the cheapest. From £30 to £40 you can get a composite racket which is a blend of aluminium and graphite. The good thing about aluminium is that it is cheap and keeps the price down but it is a very soft metal which will not give good playability during more intense games. This equates to it being fine for children's rackets and for parents to knock with the younger juniors.
From £40 up you will be able to purchase a full graphite racket which will give better playability.
Brands use different technologies which will enhance the playability of different rackets. More specific and indepth information is available in the racket descriptions. As a general overview, players rackets tend to be slightly heavier, of good construction, with smaller heads to give more control.
More powerful rackets are stiffer and broader in the frame, lighter and tend to be more expensive as the technology to keep them light and yet rigid is more expensive. If you need any advice on the choice, ask your local independent, who will usually have a background in racket sports and will be able to give a good overview.
Ideally, arrange to have a hit with a few different types to get a feel of what you prefer. Whatever you decide to pay, you need to be getting best value!
